Nissan's Project Titan
Some of you might have heard about Nissan announcing Project Titan at the 2014 Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade show earlier this year in Las Vegas. The auto maker crowdsourced ideas from it's fans to modify a Titan pickup truck, making it capable to handle extreme off-roading. The heavily modified and fortified truck will be heading to Alaska, to be driven in the backcountry by two Wounded Warrior Project Alumni, David Guzman and Kevin McMahon, and an automotive journalist to see what the upgraded truck can handle. Fans were encouraged to vote on 10 different areas of customization on a 2014 Titan Crew Cab PRO-4X. Keeping the aesthetics rugged looking, the truck was wrapped in digital camouflage with a Wounded Warrior Project emblem. More

Cars That Can Detect Drunk Drivers
For the last few years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been advocating for technological solutions to prevent drunk driving. The federal safety regulators are working closely with suppliers to develop seamless technology to be integrated into vehicles that would detect alcohol via breath and touch, and possibly even disable a vehicle, reducing or eliminating alcohol-related vehicle crashes. At a recent conference in Michigan, the NHTSA's associate administrator for vehicle safety research Nat Beuse said: "Lots of companies are out there trying to make the situation better." The agency is working on several technologies to reduce traffic fatalities, including alcohol detection technology. Safety products supplier Takata Corp. received a $2.2 million contract from the agency to develop a device to measure the sobriety of a motorist. Another supplier, Autoliv, is developing the sobriety systems. The technologies could be ready for implementation by 2018, once development and testing is complete. It is not yet determined whether the systems would disable a vehicle or issue an alert. More

Nissan IDx Freeflow and NISMO - Future Uncertain
A few months after their presentation at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2013, Andy Palmer, product manager for the Americas, said that mass production of the Nissan IDx Freeflow and Nissan IDx NISMO is not in the cards, but that Nissan would definitely make one of them happen. It seems that this is no longer the case. Mr. Palmer now says that the expected production volumes are just not sufficient, and the lack of a platform that can be shared with other models means that there is no longer any hope of mass production. The reasons make sense, since these concepts required a compact, rear-wheel drive platform. Currently, Nissan has none. These concepts are quite similar to the Datsun 510, a car that all fans of small Japanese cars remember well. The 510 had been a success in rallies during the early 1970s, before the Datsun name disappeared in favour of that of the manufacturer, Nissan. More

Nissan Plant Building Mercedes-Benz Engines
There is a new engine plant located in Decherd, Tennessee. Covering an area of 310,000 square feet, the $319 million factory has been under construction since May, 2012. With leading edge environmentally friendly design, the building boasts a heat reflecting white roof and natural lighting courtesy of skylights. Last week, production finally began on four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engines, a result of a collaboration between Renault-Nissan and Daimler AG. These engines are destined for the European versions of the Q50 sports sedan, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a car that is built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The opening ceremony was attended by the Governor of Tennessee, Bill Haslam, President of Infiniti Motor Company, Johan de Nysschen, Vice President Infiniti for America, Michael Bartsch, Vice President Operations of the plant, Gary Edwards, and production manager of Mercedes-Benz engines, Erhard Schletterer.
